Richard Maclin “Dick” Smith, Jr, 90, of Ebony, Virginia, a beloved son, brother, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away on September 11, 2024, in Burkeville, Virginia. He was born on May 9, 1934, in Kenbridge, Virginia to loving parents, the late and Honorable Richard Maclin Smith and Annie Gee Smith, and was the brother of the late Elizabeth “Betsy” Kirkland. After graduating from Kenbridge High School, Virginia, Dick matriculated to the Virginia Military Institute and would dedicate much of his life to his alma mater. Dick achieved the rank of Captain in the Army Reserves, worked as a civil engineer in Virginia and across the country, worked for the U.S. Navy as a government civilian and finally as a building inspector for Brunswick County. Dick devoted his love for VMI as the 1956 class agent for over sixteen years and would share stories and advice about VMI to whomever would listen. Dick had a deep passion for the outdoors and a strong love of well-trained bird dogs. Hunting and fishing were not merely hobbies for him; they were his foundation for bonding with family and friends. He cherished spending time immersed in nature’s beauty and took great pleasure in teaching his loved ones about the wonders of the outdoors. Dick was a Virginia lifetime supporter of the Department of Game and Inland Fisheries. Dick leaves behind a legacy that will be carried on by his daughter Sarah (Fabian) and sons Scott (Melissa) and Richard Maclin Smith, III “Mac” (Taf); grandchildren Hannah, Gretchen, Molly, Lucas, Fiona, Eli and Milo; his niece, Carole Ramser (Scott) and his nephew Randy Kirkland (Angela). In moments of joy or sadness, laughter or tears – Dick’s unwavering support proved invaluable to those around him. He was a pillar of strength, an anchor in times of trouble, and a source of unwavering love. Dick’s presence filled the lives of his family and friends with warmth and joy. Dick devoted over thirteen years as a volunteer as an Auxiliary member of the Community Memorial Hospital of South Hill, Virginia. The life of Dick Smith came to an end due to a battle with cancer. Although he is no longer physically with us, his spirit will continue to inspire all who were fortunate enough to know him. His memory will be forever etched in our hearts, and the lessons he imparted will guide us through life’s challenges. A visitation to honor Dick’s life will be held on September 19, from 6:00 to 7:30 PM at the Clark Funeral Home (110 E. Fifth Avenue, Kenbridge, VA 23944). His graveside service will take place on September 20 starting at 11:00 AM at the Kenbridge Heights Cemetery (West Street, Kenbridge, VA 23944). In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made in Dick’s honor to the VMI Foundation. Dick Smith was more than just a name; he was a compassionate soul who brightened many lives. He may have left us physically, but his spirit lingers on in our memories and stories shared. Let us remember him with laughter and love as we celebrate the remarkable life he led.
